Igor Frenkel awarded the 2024 Yang-Hui Award

for his «seminal contributions to the representation theory of infinite dimensional Lie algebras and vertex operator algebras.».

The award committee members have decided to award the Yang-Hui Award for 2024 to Igor Frenkel of the Yale University, USA.

From 2018 to present, Igor Borisovich Frenkel is a Sol Goldman Family Professor of Mathematics of Yale University, USA. In 1980, Dr. Frenkel completed his doctorate on study of orbital theory for affine Lie algebras at Yale University. He was the Chairman of Mathematics Department, Yale University from 2015 to 2018. He is a Professor of Yale University from 1987 till present day.

Prof. Dr. Frenkel is recognized for his significant contributions to the representation theory and vertex operator algebras. Igor Frenkel made fundamental contributions to representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras and their applications in theoretical physics. He, together with his collaborators and students, initiated and significantly developed a new field of vertex operator algebras with deepest relations to two-dimensional conformal field theory, sporadic groups and theory of modular functions. He also laid the foundations and extensively contributed to the categorification program with profound connections to representation theory and four-dimensional topology and quantum field theory.

Prof. Frenkel is the recipient of fellowships from the Sloan Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation. He was elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2015 and Member of the US National Academy of Sciences in 2018.   He received the 2024 Weyl-Wigner Award at the International Colloquium on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics.
