for his «seminal contributions to the fractional variational principles and their applications in control theory, and widely-known Atangana-Baleanu fractional derivative, which is a new family of general fractional calculus operators.».

The committees have decided to award the Liu-Hui Prize for 2024 to Dumitru Baleanu of Lebanese American University, Lebanon.

Dumitru Baleanu is a professor of Lebanese American University, Lebanon. In 1996, Dr. Baleanu completed his doctorate on study of spaces with spin variable in Institute of Atomic Physics, Romania.

Professor Baleanu is recognized for his significant contributions in the fields of fractional variational principles and their applications in control theory. He and coauthors developed the widely-known Atangana-Baleanu-Caputo fractional derivative, which is the fractional differential operator in the Mittag-Leffler kernel. In fact, it is called the Atangana-Baleanu fractional differential operator. It becomes a new family of general fractional calculus operators.

Professor Dumitru Baleanu was elected as a foreign fellow of African Academy of Sciences in 2019. He is a recipient of ICFDA2018 Award: Innovation in Fractional Calculus, which is granted to inventors of new patents which address major problems and have a great perspective by use of fractional calculus in real world applications.

Dr. Baleanu has received multiple awards. These include the Obada Prize in 2019, Distinguished Researcher Award by the Jaipur Mathematical Society in 2020, and Grigore Moisil given by the Romanian Academy in 2023, and C.S. Hsu Award in 2023, among others.
